There and Back
This moderate route begins at the Rt. 9 Long Trail Parking Area, just off Hwy. 9 west of Wilmington. From the trailhead, follow the Long Trail north as it steadily climbs through a dense forest of mixed hardwoods and conifers. The trail gains elevation at a consistent grade, with a few steeper sections as it approaches the ridge. After a short distance, pass a junction with a side trail—stay on the Long Trail heading north. Seasonal streams cross the trail in the lower forest, but there are no reliable water sources beyond this point.
Continue hiking through quiet woodland terrain, where moose, black bear, and deer are occasionally spotted. Near the summit of Maple Hill, partial views open up through the trees, offering brief but scenic glimpses of the surrounding Green Mountains. The route returns the way it came, descending steadily back to the trailhead. This is a peaceful and rewarding day hike in Green Mountain National Forest, especially during fall foliage season.
