Description
This rugged route begins at the Long Trail Route 9 Trailhead east of Bennington and climbs steadily through mixed hardwood forest into the highlands of southern Vermont. Follow white blazes northbound along the Long Trail, gaining elevation as the trail passes rocky drainages and seasonal streams. Around halfway, the route passes Maple Hill and Little Pond Mountain, with additional opportunities for views in between. Continue along the Long Trail as it meanders through dense spruce-fir forest, gaining elevation on the approach to Glastenbury Mountain. Just before the summit, pass the Goddard Shelter and a nearby reliable spring. A short spur leads to the Glastenbury Mountain Fire Tower. This remote stretch of the Long Trail offers solitude, wildlife sightings, and a classic backcountry experience in the Green Mountain National Forest.
