There and Back
The Waters Hill Cemetery Trail begins just off Waters Hill Road, east of Bennington, Vermont, and follows a quiet path into mixed hardwood forest. This route gradually climbs over uneven ground and passes through a series of gentle ridges before reaching the historic Waters Hill Cemetery, which dates back to the 1800s. Along the way, hikers can expect a peaceful walk under the canopy with occasional views through the trees, especially in early spring or late fall.
The route follows a lightly maintained path with sections of muddy and uneven terrain, especially after rainfall. While no junctions or marked turnoffs exist, hikers should remain on the established tread to avoid trampling surrounding vegetation. There are no water sources along the way, and dogs are allowed only if leashed. Fires and camping are not permitted. The highlight of the hike is the historic cemetery tucked into the woods, offering a quiet resting place and a glimpse into local history.
