Description
The route begins at the Prospect Mountain Nordic Ski Center just off Route 9, east of Bennington, Vermont. From the trailhead, follow marked paths through dense northern hardwood forest and begin a steady climb toward the ridgeline. The route climbs through a mix of soft forest floor and rocky stretches, with occasional steep grades requiring careful footing. As you near the top, the trail levels out, offering scenic ridgeline views and a surprising sense of solitude given the proximity to town. Continuing along the loop, follow signage to descend along a separate trail through shaded glades and seasonal streambeds. The return features less elevation gain but includes uneven terrain and occasional muddy sections. Keep an eye out for wildlife — moose, black bear, and abundant birdlife are often spotted here. This route is best hiked from late spring through fall; in winter, the trail doubles as part of a Nordic ski network, with snowshoe access available by day pass.
