This moderate route begins at the Finger Lakes Land Trust parking area on Coddington Road, in the Brooktondale-Caroline area southeast of Ithaca. The trail climbs quickly up Eastman Hill through mature oak, maple, and hemlock forests, following old logging roads and narrow footpaths. Early on, expect a sustained and sometimes strenuous ascent—especially in wet or icy conditions—before the grade eases into rolling terrain. At higher elevations, limited winter views may open through the thinning canopy.
This preserve overlaps with a rerouted section of the Finger Lakes Trail and the North Country National Scenic Trail. While no water sources are found on the route, the forested uplands help protect the Willseyville Creek valley below. The area remains open year-round, but hunting-related restrictions apply in fall—stay on marked trails and avoid visiting during firearm season. For hikers seeking quieter routes near Ithaca, this loop offers a short but rewarding walk through a biologically rich forest landscape.
