This route begins and ends at the Hammond Hill Trailhead in Tompkins County’s Hammond Hill State Forest. From the trailhead, follow signs for the primary trail network, heading gradually uphill through mixed hardwood forest. At early junctions, keep left to stay on the main route toward the old radio tower site. Around the halfway point, the trail climbs more steeply to reach a high ridgeline with panoramic views—especially scenic in fall—near the decommissioned tower clearing. Afterward, the trail descends steadily, passing through quiet woods and occasional wetlands before returning to the lower network of trails leading back to the trailhead.
Expect some rocky footing, short but steep grades, and variable surface conditions depending on the season. This is a popular route for day hikes in the Finger Lakes region and is also used by mountain bikers and winter recreationists. Wildlife sightings are common, including deer and a wide variety of birds. Hunting is permitted in the area—wear blaze orange during fall months.
