There and Back
This short, novice-friendly route begins at the Robert Frost Trailhead in North Bennington and follows a gentle forest path toward Lake Paran. The trail features a well-maintained tread with interpretive signage displaying excerpts of Frost’s poetry, offering a reflective walking experience through mixed hardwoods. About halfway in, the trail descends slightly toward the lake, revealing glimpses of Paran Creek and quiet wetland areas where birdlife is common.
Continue through the woods until reaching the Lake Paran beach area, where open views of surrounding Vermont hills create a peaceful rest point—especially striking during peak fall foliage. Return along the same route, noting that while the trail is easy to follow near the start, navigation becomes less obvious closer to the lake. Watch for ticks and mosquitoes in warmer months, and expect variable conditions if visiting in winter. This is an excellent choice for casual day hikes near Bennington with opportunities for wildlife viewing and light nature exploration.
