There and Back
This route begins near the (now closed) campus of Southern Vermont College in Bennington and climbs steadily through mixed hardwood forest toward the summit of Mount Anthony. Early on, the trail follows remnants of old carriage roads bordered by historical stone walls, then transitions into steeper and rockier singletrack. About halfway to the summit, the terrain becomes more rugged with brief Class 2 scrambling on exposed rock.
There are no water sources along this trail, and shade becomes limited near the summit—be prepared with sufficient water and sun protection. The upper section offers sweeping views of the Taconic Mountains to the west and the Green Mountains to the east, with potential wildlife sightings along the way. The route ends at the summit before retracing the same path downhill. Clear weather rewards hikers with a dramatic perspective over the Bennington Valley.
