This easy hiking route begins at the Oak Knoll Wildlife Sanctuary Trailhead in Attleboro, MA. From the trailhead, follow the Talaquega Trail through a red maple swamp, where a raised boardwalk leads across wetlands rich with skunk cabbage in early spring. Continue onto Woody’s Way for peaceful lake views and the chance to spot painted turtles or bullfrogs. A short climb leads to a bench overlooking Lake Talaquega—one of the few moderate grades on the route.
From there, follow the route onto the Puddingstone Loop to pass Roxbury Puddingstone outcrops—distinctive geological features scattered among the trees. After a short distance, turn left to explore Joyce’s Way on a side trip through mature woodland where ovenbirds, woodpeckers, and other songbirds are often seen. Return to the Puddingstone Loop to complete the route back to the trailhead. This family-friendly sanctuary route is open year-round and offers snowshoeing opportunities in winter.
