Description
The Dunbar Brook Trail begins just off River Road near the Florida–Monroe town line and climbs gradually into the heart of Monroe State Forest. Following the brook upstream, the route winds through a dense, old-growth forest of hemlock and hardwoods, with the sound of waterfalls and rapids guiding the way. Within a short distance, hikers will pass moss-covered boulders, streamside pools, and a series of cascades—especially scenic after recent rain or snowmelt. At the junction with Smith Hollow Trail, stay right to continue along the main route. As the trail climbs higher, it crosses several streams. Be prepared for slippery rocks and swift water during wetter seasons or spring thaw. An Adirondack-style backcountry shelter about halfway through the route makes for a good turnaround point or rest stop. The trail passes remnants of early farmsteads, including stone walls and cellar holes, before reaching views into the surrounding valleys near the upper end. This route is best suited for experienced hikers comfortable with stream crossings, rugged footing, and steep terrain.
