This route begins from parking near the junction of Main Road and Raycroft Road in Monroe, MA. From the parking area head south on Raycroft Road a short distance before turning right and following the blue-blazed Spruce Hill Trail, which climbs gradually through mixed hardwood and conifer forest toward the summit of Spruce Mountain. Near the top, a short side path leads to a narrow overlook with partial views. From the summit, the route continues southerly, descending along the western slopes until it reaches Raycroft Road. Turn left and follow the road north back to the starting point, or take an optional detour to Raycroft Lookout at this junction.
This area is open year-round, though snow and ice can make steeper sections hazardous. Trail blazes may be faint, and parts of the route can become overgrown or blocked by blowdowns—carry a map or GPS device and stay alert at junctions. Hunting is permitted in season, so wear blaze orange. The summit offers a quiet reward with limited views and a strong sense of backcountry solitude.
