There and Back
Begin this easy route from the campground contact station or the Haskins Trailhead on Florida Road, both located in Savoy Mountain State Forest. Follow the well-maintained Haskins Trail east through quiet, mixed hardwood forest. After a short distance, turn right at the Bog Pond Trail junction, which leads toward the pond. This section is narrower and may be wet or uneven in places, but remains gentle throughout. As you approach Bog Pond, the forest opens to views of the water and surrounding wetlands. The pond is a dammed quaking bog, known for its floating mats of sphagnum moss and acidic conditions that support unusual plant life. Along the margins, watch for pitcher plants, sundews, bladderworts, and other carnivorous species, as well as waterfowl like wood ducks, herons, and kingfishers.
To return, hikers can retrace their route on the Bog Pond and Haskins Trails. For a short alternative, take New State Road north from the pond to reconnect with the Haskins Trail, then follow it back to the campground. This option includes a brief section of paved road, which may be icy or unplowed in winter. This short route offers a peaceful forest setting and a chance to explore one of the most distinctive wetland environments in the region.
