Description
The trail begins at Mountain Road and continues on with a moderate incline, nothing too steep but no significant flat stretches either. Follow the light blue blazes. When you hit the first river crossing, bear to the left towards the blue tubes and be careful not to lose the trail. The trail continues through (what I believe to be) a maple syrup harvesting area (blue and black tubes). Then it continues upward crossing over several water features, most without bridges. Ultimately, you'll get to a somewhat flatter almost swampy section with really the first coniferous trees of the trail. This section seems to tend to be muddy, wet, and generally annoying other than the nice smell from the trees. Eventually, you'll reach Lake Solitude. Finish off the trail when you reach the intersection with the Monadnock - Sunapee Greenway: Section 6. Via this trail you can reach the summit of Mount Sunapee or at least take it just a quarter mile or so to some excellent views of the area including Lake Solitude. Be careful, as mentioned, follow the light blue blazes; however, this trail can be difficult to follow. Especially after a significant leaf drop during fall, I found myself frequently losing the trail but never got fully lost. After a heavy rain, especially in the fall, this trail seems to get very wet. I found myself hiking through a couple inches of water or mud many times, especially a very muddy and wet section near the end of the trail.
