Loop
The Great Neck Loop begins at a small parking area off Crooked River Road, just south of Great Neck Road in Wareham, Massachusetts. From the trailhead, follow the Red Trail east toward Swan Pond, skirting salt marsh habitat with excellent birding opportunities for spotting osprey, herons, and sparrows. At a Y-intersection on the Red Trail, stay right to continue as the route curves southwest. Turn right onto the Green Trail, entering a wooded parcel managed by the New England Forestry Foundation. This southern stretch winds through mixed forest and gentle terrain before looping back to rejoin the Red Trail.
Turn right again to follow the Red Trail back to the starting point. Along the way, the route passes glacial features like Bourne Hill—a low drumlin that reflects the area’s glacial past. Seasonal muddy sections are common, especially near wetland crossings and the cranberry bog restoration area. Dogs are allowed on leash, and no permits are required, though blaze orange is recommended during hunting season in adjacent parcels. This easy to intermediate route offers a peaceful hike through diverse coastal ecosystems with rewarding views and abundant birdlife.
