The East Head Reservoir Trail begins just east of the Forest Headquarters parking lot on Cranberry Road in South Carver, MA. Located within Myles Standish State Forest, this easy route forms a full circuit around the East Head Reservoir, also known locally as East Head Pond, and stays close to the shoreline as it winds through sandy pine forest and wetland edges. Begin by crossing the footbridge and turning left onto East Head Reservoir Trail. Follow signs for the “Healthy Heart” Trail and look for numbered interpretive posts that explain the area's geology, fire ecology, and bog plants.
A boardwalk crosses marshy terrain on the southern end of the reservoir, offering views of wetland vegetation and shallow water. Some stretches of the trail are narrow, rooty, or may have fallen trees, and it’s not uncommon to encounter muddy sections after rainfall. Dogs are welcome but must be leashed, and hikers should stay on the designated path. The trail remains open year-round, though seasonal conditions can affect footing or access. With its flat terrain and scenic shoreline, this short route offers a relaxed walk through varied forest and wetland habitats.
