Loop
The Erwin Ponds Loop begins and ends at a small parking area on Weaver Creek Road and follows a mix of old forest roads and unmarked paths through the heart of the Erwin Wildlife Management Area. From the trailhead, follow the main track past dense stands of hardwoods and scattered clearings. The route winds past several ponds—collectively known as the Erwin Ponds—which serve as prime birdwatching spots, especially in spring and fall. Stay right at early junctions to keep the loop clockwise, gradually gaining elevation across uneven but manageable terrain.
About halfway through, the trail passes close to a higher elevation ridgeline before descending again toward additional wetland areas and returning to the initial access road. Seasonal stream crossings and muddy sections are common, especially in early spring or after heavy rain. Wildlife is abundant throughout, including deer, beaver, and a variety of songbirds and waterfowl. This is a quiet, lesser-traveled option among day hikes in the Southern Tier, offering a peaceful forest experience with scenic pond views and a strong sense of remoteness.
