This route begins from the parking area near the York Road boat launch on the east side of Helena Valley Reservoir and traces the open shoreline and adjacent prairie terrain. Depending on water levels, hikers can complete a full circuit around the reservoir or follow a partial perimeter route. The path is mostly flat with some rolling hills and follows a mix of dirt roads, two-track paths, and informal shoreline trails. At early junctions, keep left along the water’s edge to stay on the main route.
The area is open year-round, though snow and ice can linger in winter. Spring through fall offers easier walking and better birdwatching—expect to see raptors, waterfowl, and views of the Big Belt Mountains across the water. There is little shade along the way, so bring sun protection and water. Reservoir access points appear throughout the route, but all water must be filtered or treated before drinking. This is a solid option for mellow day hikes near Helena with opportunities to stretch out along wide-open lakeshore terrain.
