Description
The Dry Gulch Short Loop begins and ends at the DeFord Trailhead near the south end of Helena’s trail system. Head uphill from the trailhead on the Eagle Scout Trail, following singletrack as it climbs gradually through a mix of ponderosa pine and Douglas fir. At the first major junction, turn right onto the Archery Range Trail and continue along rolling terrain that opens into grassy meadows with views of Mount Helena and the surrounding foothills. After crossing Davis Gulch Road, rejoin DeFord Trail heading east and descend gently through forested terrain to return to the starting point. This moderate route offers a mix of shaded woodland, open hillsides, and opportunities to spot wildlife such as deer or hawks. Be alert for mountain bikers, especially on shared-use segments.
