The Prairie and 1906 Trail route begins at the Mount Helena City Park Trailhead and ascends via the Prairie Trail, gaining elevation through open high-desert terrain. Early sections pass through grassy hillsides dotted with wildflowers in spring and offer wide views over Helena and the surrounding valley. As the route climbs, it transitions into steeper, rockier terrain, eventually reaching Mount Helena’s broad summit ridge.
From the summit, continue north and descend on the 1906 Trail, which winds down the mountain’s eastern face beneath exposed limestone cliffs. This section features several scenic overlooks and long, gradual switchbacks. Watch for loose gravel on steeper portions, and be prepared for full sun exposure throughout most of the route. The 1906 Trail returns you to the trailhead, completing a moderate route with classic views and varied terrain just minutes from downtown Helena.
