Loop
Starting at the Bompart Hill Trailhead east of Helena, MT, this route begins on the Rocky Road Trail, a short connector that is not part of the main loop. Follow this trail a short distance to reach the signed junction where the loop begins. Stay right at the junction to hike counterclockwise around the base of Bompart and Strawberry Hills, gradually climbing through a mix of pine forest and open ridgelines. Though the route never reaches the summits, it offers broad views of the Helena Valley and surrounding foothills.
As the trail wraps around the north and west sides of the hills, expect open meadows dotted with wildflowers in late spring and chances to see deer or elk. The path eventually curves south, descending back to the original junction. From there, return along the Rocky Road Trail to the parking area. Be alert for mountain bikers on shared-use sections, and carry all needed water—there are no reliable sources along the route. This is a convenient option for moderate day hikes near Helena with a mix of scenery and gentle terrain.
