This moderate route begins at the parking area on the north side of Mayflower Street in Duxbury, MA, and follows a well-marked path around the edge of North Hill Marsh, a large pond and wetland system. From the trailhead, follow the unpaved road to the left of the parking area, heading north to meet the main trail around the pond. The route winds through mixed oak and pine forest, passing several short spur trails and narrow boardwalks as it hugs the shoreline. About halfway around, views open toward the cranberry bogs and wider marsh, offering good chances to spot herons, turtles, and migratory waterfowl. This section briefly follows an access road before reentering the woods on the opposite side of the pond.
The trail crosses small stream channels and passes through low-lying sections that can be muddy, especially after rain. Tree roots and seasonal insects are common, so sturdy footwear and insect protection are recommended. Dogs are allowed but must remain under control. Managed by both Mass Audubon and the Town of Duxbury, the area is open daily from dawn to dusk. This is a peaceful and scenic day hike on the South Shore, ideal for birding or a relaxed walk in coastal woodland.
