Point to Point
This route follows a connected network of trails along the Indian Head River, weaving through riverbank woods, narrow forest corridors, and wider stretches along the former Hanover Branch Railroad bed. The route spans a mix of town conservation lands and easements across private property in Hanover, Hanson, and Pembroke, Massachusetts. Hikers can begin at several access points, including Ludden’s Ford Park on Elm Street, Cross/State Street, or Water Street in Hanover. From the Ludden’s Ford Park trailhead on the south side of the river, follow the Indian Head River Trail west, staying right at trail intersections and close to the river until reaching State Street. Stay on marked trails to avoid private land through this section. At State Street, turn right and cross the bridge onto Cross Street. Turn right on Broadway for a short distance before rejoining the Indian Head River Trail and heading back into the woods to return to the trailhead.
The trail passes historic industrial sites like the old Waterman Tack Factory, stone foundations, and dam remnants, offering a glimpse into the area’s manufacturing past. Rocky Run Brook, small footbridges, and glacial erratics add to the variety. Some sections are narrow or root-filled, with footing that can become slippery when wet. While the terrain remains mostly gentle, expect some uneven ground, especially near rock walls or along the riverbank. Dogs are allowed but should remain on leash. Year-round access and multiple trailhead options make this a convenient route for exploring South Shore hiking trails. Scenic river views, quiet woodlands, and a blend of natural and cultural features provide a rewarding outdoor experience.
