This route begins at the main parking area of Ames Nowell State Park, located off Linwood Street in Abington, Massachusetts. From the trailhead, head west toward Cleveland Pond, then follow the trail as it begins to loop around the shoreline. Most hikers choose to travel in a northerly direction, keeping the pond to their left. The main route closely follows the pond’s edge, with several spur trails providing optional side trips down to the water.
As the trail wraps around the pond, it weaves through mixed hardwood forest, over footbridges, and across boardwalks that span marshy areas. Some sections may be muddy or flooded, especially after heavy rain or during spring runoff. While trail markings can be inconsistent, the path remains generally easy to follow with the aid of a map or GPS. The route is mostly level, with gentle elevation changes and some uneven terrain marked by roots and rocks. Keep an eye out for waterfowl and woodland birds along the wetlands. Open year-round, this route offers a quiet and scenic day hike suitable for hikers and mountain bikers exploring state park trails in Eastern Massachusetts.
