The Madison Buffalo Jump Loop Trail begins at the main trailhead in Madison Buffalo Jump State Park, just southeast of Three Forks. From the parking area, follow the well-marked path as it climbs gradually across open grassland toward the base of the limestone cliffs that mark the historic buffalo jump. Interpretive signs along the way offer insight into the area's significance as a traditional hunting site used by Indigenous peoples for thousands of years. At a signed junction near the base of the cliffs, keep right to continue clockwise on the loop. The trail briefly ascends uneven but manageable terrain to a natural overlook, where hikers can scan the Madison River Valley and distant Tobacco Root Mountains.
The route continues along the bluff's edge before gradually descending back toward the starting point. While the trail is relatively gentle, it crosses exposed terrain with no shade or water. Camping, fires, and motorized use are not permitted within the park. This easy to moderate hike offers a unique blend of natural beauty and cultural history, making it a worthwhile stop for day hikes in southwest Montana.
