The Fort Rock Trail begins and ends near the north end of Missouri Headwaters State Park, just off Trident Road in Three Forks, Montana. This easy, well-signed route forms a short loop over mostly level terrain, making it accessible year-round when conditions allow. From the trailhead, follow the clearly defined path as it loops through open meadows and low hills near the confluence of the Jefferson, Madison, and Gallatin Rivers. Interpretive signs along the way provide historical context about the Lewis and Clark Expedition and the geographic significance of the Missouri River headwaters.
Benches and picnic tables are spaced throughout the route, offering opportunities to rest and take in wide-open views of the surrounding plains and distant mountain ranges. Wildlife sightings and birding opportunities are common, especially in early mornings. The trail surface can become muddy or unstable during wet conditions, and portions may be closed during spring thaw or after heavy rain. Dogs are allowed, but check current rules regarding leash requirements. This route offers an easy and rewarding way to explore one of Montana’s most historically rich landscapes.
