The Greer Gulch Trail begins just behind the Lewis and Clark Caverns Visitor Center and forms a moderate route through the scenic terrain surrounding the state park. Heading out from the main trailhead, the route follows a well-defined path into the gulch, climbing gradually through open juniper forest and beneath rugged limestone walls. Within a short distance, hikers enter the heart of the canyon, where the trail meanders through quiet, rocky terrain that supports wildflower blooms in spring and attracts mule deer and songbirds throughout the warmer months.
As the trail curves back toward the trailhead, expect a few uneven, rockier sections and brief elevation gains, but no scrambling or technical challenges. Rattlesnakes may be active on warm days, and ticks are common in taller grass, especially along the lower portions of the route. This is one of the best short day hikes near Lewis and Clark Caverns for a quiet experience with classic Montana canyon scenery.
