Description
The Bear Trap Canyon Trail begins at the Beartrap Trailhead near the Madison River takeout and follows the river downstream through a remote section of the Lee Metcalf Wilderness. Managed by the BLM, this route hugs the base of towering canyon walls and crosses stretches of uneven terrain with light scrambling. It travels southward along the river toward the Warm Springs area, eventually ending near the Ennis Lake outlet. The trail remains close to the river, providing frequent access for fly fishing and dispersed camping. This is a classic wilderness hike with seasonal highlights ranging from spring wildflowers to vibrant fall foliage. The canyon is home to bighorn sheep, bald eagles, and both grizzly and black bears—carry bear spray and practice food storage protocols. This wild canyon hike offers sustained river views, quiet solitude, and a true backcountry feel, all within close proximity to the Madison Valley.
