There and Back
This high-elevation route begins at the Spanish Creek Trailhead in the Gallatin Range and climbs steadily along the South Fork Spanish Creek Trail through forested terrain. After a series of moderate switchbacks, stay right at the Y-intersection with the Mirror Lake Trail. The route follows South Fork Spanish Creek for much of the climb, offering reliable water access and shaded rest spots. After a long, steady approach, turn left at the junction for Mirror Lake and ascend steeper, rockier terrain into the upper basin.
Beyond Mirror Lake, the trail continues uphill through open alpine meadows toward Summit Lake. Expect Class 2 footing across talus and steeper grades as you near the Spanish Peaks Divide. Wildflowers often blanket the basin in early summer, and wildlife sightings—especially moose and black bear—are common. The route ends at Summit Lake, a clear alpine tarn tucked below rugged ridgelines with sweeping views of Blaze Mountain and the Gallatin Divide.
