Storm Castle Peak

Looming high above the Gallatin River Canyon is a unique, massive rocky peak. At 7,170 feet, Storm Castle Peak features grand views of Garnet Mountain, the Gallatin River and a small stretch of the upper Madison Range. If youare looking for a hike with views and substantial elevation gain, put Storm Castle on your adventure list. The trail wastes no time in gaining elevation. Switchback up the mountain, alternating through forest and the open, rocky slope. If youare hiking in late July or August, bring ample water with you for the way up. Take a break or two and soak in the views across Storm Castle Creek Canyon. As you near the ridge, impressive limestone cliffs come into view to the east, though the trail itself does not venture there. The trail does level out over 2 miles in. Here, the trail starts to have several off-shoots. Continue on the lowest path to get to the rocky peak. Youall be sure to find a good seat. Before you leave the top, donat forget to stop by the rock arch. This cave-like opening is a popular spot for photos and for good reason. It frames an excellent view of the Hyalite area. Storm Castle is a popular day hike for locals, so the small gravel parking lot fills quickly. Hiking early in the morning or on weekdays are your best bets. Overflow parking off the side of the road is available if the lot is full. Youare able to hike this trail without snow as early as April and as late as November.
