There and Back
The Pioneer Falls Trail begins at the Spanish Creek Trailhead in the Lee Metcalf Wilderness and follows a well-maintained path along the north side of Spanish Creek. The route gradually climbs through dense lodgepole and fir forest, with several stream crossings and open meadows offering intermittent views of nearby peaks. At a marked junction in the first stretch, stay right to continue along the main trail into a narrowing canyon. Around halfway in, the forest opens into broad alpine meadows with views of the Gallatin Range and distant ridgelines.
As the route nears its end, the trail steepens slightly before reaching the base of the dramatic 40-foot cascade fed by Pioneer Creek. This is a popular turnaround point for hikers and horseback riders. The return follows the same route back to the trailhead. This moderate day hike is best in summer or early fall and offers access to reliable water sources, wildlife habitat, and classic Montana scenery.
