There and Back
The route begins and ends at the Cherry Road parking area within State Game Lands Number 254, west of the Susquehanna River. The trail follows a well-defined path that gradually climbs the northern slope of Berry Mountain through mixed hardwood forest. Early on, hikers pass through relatively flat terrain before encountering a moderate ascent marked by roots, uneven ground, and occasional blowdown typical of less-trafficked woodland routes.
Stay on the main trail as it winds upward along the ridgeline, avoiding faint side paths and informal junctions. There are no marked trail signs or blazes, so be alert and consider using GPS or a map to stay oriented. The upper sections offer intermittent views through the trees, especially in leaf-off seasons. After the trail levels out near the ridgetop, retrace your steps back to the parking area. This is a quiet choice among day hikes in Central Pennsylvania, offering dense forest, potential wildlife sightings, and minimal crowds year-round.
