This moderate route begins and ends at the main Detweiler Park parking area off Peters Mountain Road, near Dauphin and northeast of Harrisburg. From the trailhead, head east on the Stackpole Loop and turn right onto David’s Field Loop, entering the main circuit through the park. Stay right at successive junctions to follow a continuous loop through Meade’s Mountain Loop and the Airstrip Loop. After circling the far end of the park, reconnect with David’s Field Loop via Meade’s Mountain Loop, and return to the trailhead by retracing your steps along the Stackpole Loop.
The trail winds through hardwood forest, open fields, and seasonal wetlands, offering a mix of shaded paths and exposed meadow walking. Several hillside segments provide scenic views across the park’s varied terrain. The route features rolling climbs, occasional muddy stretches, and uneven tread with roots and rocks. Dogs are welcome but must remain leashed at all times. There are no potable water sources — bring enough for the day and pack out all waste. With its variety of ecosystems and frequent wildlife sightings, this route offers a rewarding day hike close to central Pennsylvania.
