This moderate ridge route begins at the Clarks Ferry Park & Ride near Duncannon, PA, just off US‑22/PA‑147. Start near the railroad tracks and follow white blazes of the Appalachian Trail as the route climbs steadily through forested switchbacks toward Peters Mountain Ridge. Early on, hikers must cross active train tracks — use caution and stay alert. After gaining elevation, the trail levels along the ridge, offering frequent views through the trees, with several open outcrops providing sweeping looks at the Susquehanna and Juniata rivers below.
Follow the ridge east a short distance before turning left onto a descending trail that leads back to the trailhead. The terrain is typical of central Pennsylvania AT hiking, with uneven footing, exposed rock, and sections of minor scrambling. There are no reliable water sources along the route, so plan accordingly. This route is best hiked in cooler months when leaf-off conditions enhance visibility, though it remains accessible in winter with proper gear for ice or snow. With classic Appalachian Trail character and panoramic river valley views, this is one of the most rewarding day hikes near Harrisburg.
