Loop
The Henderson‑Swasey Loop begins at the signed parking area off Newfields Road, just west of the railroad trestle underpass and south of Route 101. This route combines segments of the Green, Blue, and Yellow Trails, along with a short stretch on the Gas Pipeline Trail, to form a longer hiking loop through the western section of Henderson‑Swasey Town Forest. Starting on the Green Trail, hikers wind through mixed hardwood forest with an optional spur along Deanes’s Dream Trail before linking to the Yellow Trail at a well-marked junction. After a modest climb and descent through ledges and boulder outcrops, continue onto the Blue Trail for a return stretch past seasonal wetlands and vernal pools. Reconnect with the Green Trail and continue south. The Gas Pipeline Trail connects the loop just before reaching the original junction near the trailhead.
The route is well-established, though trail markers may be faded in some sections. Expect generally easy hiking with short, rolling climbs and uneven footing in spots. Conditions can be muddy following wet weather, especially near low-lying areas. This hike offers frequent birding opportunities and occasional wildlife sightings. For an extended outing, a culvert under Route 101 connects to the Oaklands Town Forest.
