This moderate route begins off Granby Road near the town of Granby in Vermont’s remote NE corner and winds through dense northern hardwood. From the trailhead, follow a well-defined path that gradually ascends the southern slopes of Cow Mountain. Well before the summit climb, a spur trail descends toward Cow Mountain Pond, a quiet mid-route destination ideal for a break or picnic. The pond also provides a reliable water source—though filtering is essential—and offers chances to spot moose, deer, and a variety of birdlife. The route continues to the peak with occasional steep grades and uneven footing typical of Class 2 terrain. After gaining the high point near the summit, expect intermittent views through breaks in the trees across.
The return segment completes the loop through mixed forest with occasional overgrown stretches that may require some wayfinding. This backcountry route is best tackled between late May and October, outside of Vermont’s mud season. Expect black flies in early summer and limited cell coverage throughout. For experienced hikers seeking solitude and classic New England terrain, this route delivers a quiet, rewarding day in the woods.
