There and Back
The Lemondrop Trail begins at Twin Cabins Trailhead, located just south of Big Sky behind Rainbow Ranch Lodge. From the trailhead, the route climbs steadily through forested gullies and open meadows toward a high saddle. At the saddle, hikers reach a junction, stay left to continue up the final ridgeline to Lemon’s Knob, a rounded summit with sweeping views. Under wet conditions, sections in the forest can become muddy, and hikers may opt for a drier, unmarked slope to reach the saddle.
The route passes through Gallatin National Forest and edges the Hyalite–Porcupine–Buffalo Horn Wilderness Study Area, where motorized use is prohibited. It’s popular with both hikers and horseback riders during the snow-free season. Though the trail passes through gullies and meadows, there are no reliable water sources. From the summit, expect 360° views of the Gallatin River corridor and surrounding peaks.
