The Uplands Trail begins just off Aspen Creek Drive, near the South Fork of the West Fork of the Gallatin River in Big Sky. From the trailhead, head south and start climbing steadily through a mix of lodgepole pine forest and open hillsides. At the first junction, the trail enters more gradual terrain on the ascent. The trail winds through broad meadows that bloom with wildflowers in early summer and are often home to elk and mule deer. As the trail gains elevation, long views open up across the Gallatin Range, with Lone Peak visible to the west.
Once along the upper ridgeline, the route follows gentle ups and downs across exposed terrain before descending gradually back into the forest. Complete the route by closing the loop at the following the trail back to your starting point. There are no reliable water sources on this hike, and snow may linger in early summer. This is a popular option for day hikes near Big Sky, especially for hikers looking for scenic vistas without a long approach.
