There and Back
The Bear Basin Trail begins at the North Fork Trailhead and follows the North Fork of the West Fork Gallatin River into the heart of the Gallatin Range. The route gradually gains elevation as it winds upstream through dense forest, crossing side streams and climbing steadily toward Bear Basin. At a signed Y-intersection early in the route, stay left to continue along the main drainage. Openings in the trees offer occasional views of surrounding ridgelines, and by mid-summer, alpine meadows fill with wildflowers and blooming beargrass.
Past the forested stretch, the trail enters more open terrain as it approaches Bear Basin. This upper section traverses Class 2 terrain with moderate to challenging footing and extended climbs. The final stretch delivers expansive views across the basin, with possible sightings of elk, moose, or black bear. Dispersed camping is allowed below timberline, and water is available from multiple sources, though it should be treated. Due to seasonal snowpack and spring runoff, this route is best from late June through early fall. The high elevation and remote setting reward hikers with quiet solitude and sweeping alpine scenery.
