The Hummocks Trail starts and ends at the Hummocks Trailhead just west of Big Sky Town Center, off Aspen Leaf Drive. This easy-to-moderate route winds through rolling glacial terrain known as hummocks—rounded hills formed by retreating glaciers. From the trailhead, follow the well-marked dirt path as it gradually climbs and descends through open meadows and stands of young forest.
Expect broad views of Lone Peak and the surrounding Madison Range, along with summer wildflowers and the chance to spot moose or deer in low-lying marshy areas. Water may be present along the route, but it's not suitable for drinking without treatment. Bear spray is strongly recommended, especially in early mornings or late evenings when wildlife is more active. This is a good option for shorter day hikes in the Big Sky area with mild elevation changes and open scenery.
