The Elkhorn Creek Trail begins at the Elkhorn Trailhead, located at the south end of Red Cliff Campground along the Gallatin River. The route starts with a scenic stretch near the river before veering inland, following Elkhorn Creek into a forested drainage managed by the Custer Gallatin National Forest. After leaving the river corridor, the trail climbs steadily through a mix of mossy hillsides, open forest, and rocky outcrops. Early on, hikers may pass a few dispersed campsites before the trail narrows and becomes more secluded.
Around the first mile, the trail begins gaining elevation up the Elkhorn drainage. Expect several unbridged creek crossings, which can become more difficult during spring runoff. The tread varies, with some overgrown sections and occasional loose footing. As you ascend, white rock spires appear above the canopy, and the quiet valley offers potential wildlife sightings, including elk and various bird species. Water from Elkhorn Creek and tributaries is available after the river section, but must be treated. This route offers a moderate day hike with riverside scenery, deep forest solitude, and glimpses of dramatic limestone features.
