This point-to-point route begins at the Buffalo Horn Trailhead and climbs gradually along Buffalo Horn Creek through forest and meadow. At a signed junction, stay right to remain on the Buffalo Horn Trail. Continue past several forks, following signs toward the pass. The trail steepens as it approaches Buffalo Horn Pass, passing through open alpine terrain with expansive views of the Gallatin Range. From the pass, look for distant views into Tom Miner Basin and the surrounding peaks.
Begin the descent by following the trail east from the pass. This side sees less traffic and includes sections of loose tread and steep switchbacks. Be prepared to navigate through unsigned junctions. Stay generally right at trail splits to follow the route along Trail Creek. As you drop into the forested Ramshorn drainage, the trail parallels alpine streams and enters the Petri Forest area near the Gallatin Petrified Forest interpretive site. The route ends at the Ramshorn Trailhead, a short distance from the Tom Miner Basin road. Expect a remote, rewarding experience with alpine meadows, wildlife sightings, and challenging terrain.
