Loop
This mellow trail route begins from a roadside parking area and kiosk off New Boston Road in Tolland, MA. Start by following the Charlotte Clark Loop, staying left at the first intersection. This short circuit passes through mature forest marked by stone walls, glacial erratics, and scattered red cedar skeletons—evidence of past land use. The loop offers gentle elevation changes and generally well-marked paths, though footing can be uneven due to roots and rocks.
Roughly halfway through, hikers can either continue around the Charlotte Clark Loop for a shorter outing or take the Richardson Brook Trail, which descends gradually toward the brook. This quieter extension follows along the streambank, offering views of clear water tumbling over rocks and moss-lined banks. After looping back and rejoining the Charlotte Clark Loop, stay left to complete the circuit back to the trailhead. This is an excellent short day hike in Western Massachusetts for those interested in forest ecology, glacial geology, and streamside walking.
