There and Back
The Old Baldy Summit Trail begins at a small parking area on Norton Road within the Old Baldy Wildlife Sanctuary, managed by Mass Audubon in Otis, Massachusetts. This route climbs steadily from the start, gaining elevation quickly as it ascends through a mixed hardwood forest. The trail is short but steep, with no junctions—just a single, well-defined path to the top.
At the summit, hikers reach an open clearing maintained as early-successional habitat for species like the New England Cottontail. Broad 360° views span the surrounding Berkshires and nearby hilltowns. Moose and black bear have been observed in the sanctuary, so remain alert and follow standard wildlife awareness practices. Foot travel is the only permitted use, and dogs, fires, and camping are prohibited. Parking is limited, and the access road is narrow—arrive early to avoid congestion. This quick route offers a high-reward summit experience with minimal time on trail.
