The York Lake Loop Trail begins at the day-use parking area near the beach and picnic grounds off East Hill Road in Sandisfield State Forest. Look for the blue-blazed trail at the north end of the beach area. From the start, the route heads into mixed northern hardwood forest and hemlock stands, with occasional views of York Lake. It crosses small streams and wet zones on boardwalks, and features gently rolling terrain throughout. Some segments—particularly along the eastern side—can be muddy or uneven after rain.
After circling the lake, the route turns left onto East Hill Road, crosses the dam, and reconnects with the day-use area. Along the way, hikers may encounter interpretive signage, remnants of 1930s CCC work, and wildlife such as beavers, mink, or kingfisher. While easy and family-friendly, hikers should watch for seasonal blowdowns or soggy footing. This is a popular short route for those seeking a peaceful walk, especially in summer when swimming and boating are available nearby.
