This route begins at a trailhead off West Hartland Road about 0.5 miles south of the Granville State Forest headquarters, across from the campground. Follow the Halfway Brook Trail east through mixed hardwood forest to the junction with the Hubbard River Trail. Just before the junction hikers must ford the Hubbard River — an obstacle that may be impassable in high water.
From here, hikers can choose between two main options. For a shorter outing, turn north on the Hubbard River Trail and follow it upstream. A side trail offers a quick detour to the scenic Hubbard River Falls. Continue north until the trail meets West Hartland Road and turn left. After a brief road walk, turn left again onto the paved access road and follow it back to the Halfway Brook Trail and the trailhead. The second option offers a longer route by instead turning south on the Hubbard River Trail. Along this section, look for the remains of an old sawmill. Continue to the junction with Ore Hill Trail before retracing your steps and completing the route as described in the first option.
