There and Back
The Sunday Mountain Trail begins from an informal roadside pull-out along Indian Pond Road in Orford, New Hampshire, and climbs steadily through mixed hardwood forest toward the peak. The lower section of the route follows a well-defined path that winds past seasonal seeps and shaded glades. As the trail gains elevation, footing becomes more uneven, with stretches of exposed roots and rocky tread. At a major bend in the trail, roughly halfway up, the grade steepens, transitioning to tighter switchbacks that climb the upper ridge.
Near the summit, hikers encounter sections of rougher terrain and short scrambles over ledges, especially during wet or icy conditions. The route tops out on a broad, open summit with ledgy outcrops that offer wide views north toward the White Mountains and west across the Connecticut River Valley. This is a popular fall foliage hike, and the trail sees increased use during peak color. After enjoying the summit, return along the same trail. Sunday Mountain offers a quiet but rewarding half-day hike with solid terrain variety and classic New England summit views.
