The Coon Mountain Trail begins at a small parking area off Halds Road, just outside Westport, NY. From the trailhead, the route climbs steadily through mixed hardwood forest toward the summit of Coon Mountain. Early on, hikers encounter a signed junction with the Hidden Valley Trail. Take the right fork to ascend more directly, saving the longer Hidden Valley Trail for the descent. The trail remains moderately steep throughout, with one short rocky section that may require careful footing.
As the trail gains elevation, the forest opens to ledges and outcrops that offer increasing views to the east. At the top, broad slabs provide a striking vantage point overlooking Lake Champlain, with the Green Mountains rising on the far horizon. This short, rewarding route is popular for day hikes in the Adirondack foothills and offers excellent opportunities for birdwatching and photography.
