There and Back
The Upper Seymour Lake Trail begins at the Seymour Lake Trailhead in the Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest and follows a well-defined path along Seymour Creek into the Anaconda-Pintler Wilderness. The trail climbs steadily through mixed forest before leveling out near Lower Seymour Lake. From there, continue upstream, crossing several small creeks and gaining elevation as the route ascends into open subalpine terrain. Wildflower-filled meadows and occasional mountain goat sightings add to the scenic value as you approach the high basin.
At a marked junction near the lower lake, stay right and follow the trail to Upper Seymour Lake. The final section involves a moderate to strenuous climb over rocky tread and exposed terrain. Water is abundant along the way, but filtering is essential. This is prime grizzly habitat—carry bear spray, practice proper food storage, and expect solitude. Snow may linger into early summer, and muddy sections are common after runoff. The trail ends at Upper Seymour Lake, a quiet alpine destination surrounded by peaks and expansive wilderness views.
