There and Back
The Barker Lakes Trail begins near the Barker Creek drainage, accessed from Mill Creek Road in the Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest. From the trailhead, follow a well-defined path that steadily climbs through mixed forest along Barker Creek. The route becomes steeper as it approaches a high basin filled with alpine lakes set beneath rugged granite ridgelines. Expect wildflower meadows and expansive views as you gain elevation. Several small lake basins offer excellent opportunities for camping, fishing, and wildlife sightings—elk and mountain goats are often spotted in this area.
The maintained trail gradually fades beyond the primary lake basin, and further travel requires off-trail navigation across rocky slopes and subalpine terrain. Snow may linger into midsummer, and weather can shift quickly at higher elevations, so proper gear and preparation are essential. Water is abundant along the route, but always treat before use. Bear spray is strongly recommended due to grizzly activity in the region. This route rewards hikers with a high-alpine experience and quiet solitude deep in the Pintler Range.
