The Black Creek Preserve Trail begins at a small parking area off Route 9W in Esopus, NY, and offers a short but varied hiking route managed by Scenic Hudson. From the trailhead, follow the main path through a shaded forest that quickly descends to a suspension bridge crossing over Black Creek. After crossing, the trail climbs gradually and reaches a Y-intersection—keep right to continue toward the Hudson River overlook. The overlook sits above the riverbank with filtered views of the Hudson and is the main turnaround point for this spur. Another short spur near the end provides access to a second overlook before reconnecting with the main trail for the return hike across the bridge. The trail is well-marked, though sections can be muddy or root-covered, especially in wet or icy conditions. Black Creek runs alongside parts of the route, offering pleasant views but no potable water.
This easy-to-moderate hike is a popular year-round option for day hikers near the Hudson Valley, with enough terrain variety and natural features to make it a worthwhile trip.
